Burgess Creek Condos Proposal Denied

Steamboat Springs Colorado Condominiums

Located just above Ski Time Square, Burgess Creek condos have spent extensive amounts of time trying to get approval for renovations to the condominiums from the city planning department since 2016, but have met with resistance along the way.

When developers first introduced plans in late 2016 to change the Burgess Creek Condos, the most resistance came from nearby homeowners who did not like the new building’s density or height. After the developers pared down their design for renovations, it was the city planning department that put the brakes on the second plan, because it advocated removing public amenities, such as a fire pit in the common area and public sidewalks.

According to an article in Steamboat Today, from February of 2017, the city planning department’s report that critiqued the new plans for Burgess Creek Condominiums concluded that the proposal did not seem like a good fit because in and around Ski Town Square, they encourage “multi-use buildings, with pedestrian-oriented, ground-level retail and other active uses.”

Planning Director Tyler Gibbs explained that the property is 30 to 40 feet above other nearby properties in Ski Time Square and that “having more residents at the site outweighed the concerns about a lack of commercial and retail spaces.”

Burgess Creek Architect Hopes For New Design Guidelines

According to project architect, Eric Smith, he hoped that the design for the Burgess Creek Condominiums would spark a fresh discussion among city council members about whether more contemporary buildings will be allowed in the base area when older design guidelines are still in place, dating back 10-15 years.

Smith said: “we’re trying to do a fresher, more contemporary product,” which is good news because more modern designs are what buyers are seeking.

Buyers Want Contemporary Condos

So while it may seem that things are stalled with the city planning department, it is clear that architects, builders, and home designers are on board with trying to rise and meet the growing demands of what buyers want. Additionally, it is a good sign that buyers are making their desires known, because ultimately, buyers are what will help drive the real estate market on the mountain and the continued sale of condominiums.
